Managing the IT function

Today we're doing IT governance: Standards and Change Controls.

If we don't know where the IT is going, it doesn't really matter if you have brilliant IT. You need to create clear and appropriate IT governance (Broadbent and Kitzis, 2005:9). IT governence refers to the proper management of the IT group functions. It is a set of formal policies and processes put in place to ensure proper decision making around IT.

We need IT governence because:

  • Potential for inappropriate and irrelevant processes that are not well monitored

  • Risk management and control

  • Clarification of roles and responsibilities

  • Formalised integration, cooperation and collaboration

Good IT governence

  • Builds trust

  • Means better delivery

  • Sychronises IT strategy with business strategy

  • Encourages desirable behaviours in the use of IT

Why standards? Why benchmark?

  • Best practice and standardisation

  • Comparison

  • Certification and trust building

  • Internal controls

  • Expert Input

  • Diagnostics and analysis

  • Process orientation

I can't be bothered anymore.
